Understanding Dental Cleanings

Dental cleanings are more than just a routine procedure; they’re crucial to maintaining oral health. During a dental cleaning, plaque and tartar that have built up over time are removed, helping to prevent cavities, gum disease, and other dental issues. We encourage patients to receive a dental cleaning every six months to keep their teeth and gums in optimal condition. At Palmetto Smiles of Beaufort, we use advanced technology and tools to ensure thorough and efficient cleaning.

The Benefits of Dental Cleanings

Regular dental cleanings offer numerous benefits that go beyond just having a brighter smile:

  1. They help prevent tooth decay and cavities by removing plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that can erode tooth enamel.
  2. Dental cleanings reduce the risk of gum disease, which can lead to serious health issues if left untreated.
  3. Professional cleanings can detect early signs of dental problems, allowing for timely intervention and treatment.

The Dental Cleaning Process

  1. Initial Examination: Before the cleaning begins, a dental hygienist or dentist will thoroughly examine your mouth, checking for signs of decay, gum disease, or other oral health issues.
  2. Plaque and Tartar Removal: The hygienist will expertly remove plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth using specialized tools. We will use a tool known as a scaler, which scrapes away hardened deposits.
  3. Professional Cleaning: After the bulk of plaque and tartar is removed, a power brush and a gritty toothpaste are used to brush and polish your teeth. This step helps remove any residual plaque and provides a deep clean.
  4. Flossing: The hygienist will then floss between your teeth to eliminate any remaining plaque and thoroughly clean areas that brushing may have missed.
  5. Rinsing: We will give you a rinse to help clear your mouth of debris and excess toothpaste.
  6. Fluoride Treatment (optional): Depending on your dental health, we may use fluoride to strengthen your enamel and help prevent cavities.
  7. Final Consultation: Once the cleaning is complete, your dentist will discuss any findings and recommend personalized oral care tips or follow-up treatments if necessary.

Caring for Your Teeth at Home

Maintaining good oral health continues beyond the dentist’s office. Here are some tips to keep your teeth healthy between cleanings:

  • Brush Twice Daily: Use a fluoride toothpaste and brush for at least two minutes each time.
  • Floss Daily: Remove food particles and plaque between your teeth and the gumline.
  • Eat a Balanced Diet: Limit sugary snacks and drinks and consume plenty of fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.
  • Replace Your Toothbrush: Change your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles become damaged.
  • Visit Your Dentist Regularly: Keep up with your dental appointments for cleanings and checkups. If it is time for your next dental cleaning, please schedule an appointment with us today!
